Boala infectioasa, contagioasa si epidemics, pro- dusa de &#8222;Rickettsia prowazeki (dupa numele medicilor ameri-cani Ricketts si von Prowazek, victime ale t. e.), transmisa prin paduchi. Dupa o incubatie de 5-20 zile, boala se manifesta prin febra mare, exantem rozeoliform difuz al trunchiului si al membrelor, hemoragii subcutanate (*petesii), dureri difuze, depresiune nervoasa si, adesea, o stare toxiinfectioasa grava. Profilaxia se face prin izolarea bolnavilor, deparazitare si vac- cinare. Sin.: tifos epidemic, tifos istoric, tifos petesial.
